Sean-Paul Kelley | San Antonio | April 6
The Agonist - Our friendly correspondent in DC tells The Agonist today that "The negative publicity generated about this event so far may prevent it from happening all together. People are calling their representatives and even the venue where the event will take place, warning them about the terrorist history of the group."
We are attempting to have an Agonist correspondent cover the event, but in the meantime here is some background on MEK.
Previous updates after the jump.
Update: Laura Rozen has more on MEK
A friend in DC tells me that the Iranian group MEK is planning a major convention on April 14 in Washington. This group is classified as a terrorist organization by the State Department.
The convention is apparently called something like, "The Great Iranian Convention Supporting Establishment of a Republic in Iran: Democratic Change and Secularism in Iran."
It is being convened by the Coalition for Democracy in Iran. Maryam Akhavan and Pardis Maleehi are the leader and spokesperson respectively of this organization.
They are inviting many prominent US political and cultural figures, including George Shultz, Newt Gingrich, and James Baker. Plus they've invited numerous Senators and House members, including: Sens. Allard (R-CO), Brownback (R-KS), Hutchinson (R-TX), Allen (R-VA), Enzi (R-WY), Shelby (R-AL), Sessions (R-AL), Kyl (R-AZ), Martinez (R-FL), Inhofe (R-OK), Biden (D-DE), Salazar (D-CO), and Coleman (R-MN), and Reps. Sherman (D-CA), Lee (D-CA), Davis (D-CA), Diaz-Balart (R-FL), Jackson Lee (D-TX), Clay (D-MO), Walsh (R-NY), Wilson (R-NM), Davis (R-VA), Watson (D-CA), Napolitano (D-CA), McKinney (D-GA), and Scott (D-GA).
The stated objective of the convention is to garner support for the third solution presented by Mariam Rajavi and the Committee on Iran Policy in order to secure the support of Iranian people and the Iranian opposition with the objective of toppling the government of Iran.
So, how different is this from Hamas doing a convention in Los Angeles?
Update: Here's the announcement for the convention. And here is the interesting thing: anyone who attends this conference can be prosecuted. I guess they've all been warned, right?
