Flash Update XII

12:14 CST A reader writes that Peter Arnett just said, "they are taking out whole buildings with these missiles."

12:11 CST according to Ha'aretz roughly the same thing is occuring over Kirkuk. Other sources indicate that up to ten buildings, including a presidential palace, have been destroyed in just a few minutes. In Baghdad, that is.

12:06 CST There is still a little bit of ack-ack. But Baghdad is getting hammered. It does not look good. This is much, much worse than Desert Storm. Live color pictures on TV. Baghdad will be a mess tomorrow. I can still hear a little ack-ack going. But I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't get taken out soon.

12:05 CST The DOW is up 158 points.

12:02 CST They are bombing the hell out of Baghad. Shock and awe, at least from my TV set has commenced. I feel very sad for the innocents who will unneccesarily perish. The TV camera is shaking the bombs are so powerful. The ack-ack seems to have been taken out at this point. I guess this IS where those B-52s were headed.

12:00 CST Lots of ack-ack. Lots and lots of it are going off over Baghdad. CNN is live. It also looks as if lots of bombs are being dropped. Damn, that last one was really loud. I'm glad I am not there.

11:59 CST At least two major targets in Baghdad have been hit.

11:55 CST I'm blogging via PDA, bear with me. I really do wish I could cite all the sources here. If you're upset about it as some people are, please understand the time constraints I am under. Please also note that some of the updates are copied and pasted others are not. Just consider it all from another news source unless I say otherwise. I'm not interested in pissing anyone off here. I'm just trying to provide a service.

11:49 CST Saddam and Qusay were reportedly on Iraqi TV today. No details.

11:48 CST US is attacking Baghdad via Turkish airpspace reports Ha'araetz.

11:47 CST Pentagon announces that today is 'A-Day'. I guess that means shock and awe is here.

11:45 CST Mosul is being bombed right now. via Al Jezeera. via Stratfor.

11:41 CST Turks have crossed the border, claiming it is an humanitarian mission. Perhaps this is why we are having such problems getting overflight rights?

11:40 CST A reader who works in a satellite maping office says that the oil wells ARE on fire. He also adds that CNN is useless in this matter. He is going to try and get me some photos. We'll see.

11:37 CST Second Marine killed in Iraq. Hat tip to a reader. CNN has reported it as well.

11:35 Ack-ack in Baghdad. It is about time for those B-52s to be coming into Baghdad. If that is where they are heading. The AF hasn't done enough air defense suppression yet. Maybe there are heading into the fight in the Western Desert or perhaps Basra. There has been a lot of activity there.

11:34 CST CNN has reportedly been kicked out of Baghdad. No surpirse there. 4 reporters, that is.

11:31 CST FT is reporting that the US will not release oil from its strategic stockpiles. It will depend on Saudi Arabia to make up the difference.

Hadn't seen this posted yet:
Saddam reportedly seen leaving complex on stretcher.

Posted by: Ross on March 21, 2003 11:28 AM

aaah! what will we do?!

*hopes the meeting doesn't last too terribly long*

Posted by: corey on March 21, 2003 11:28 AM

And thanks for all your hard work, Sean-Paul!

Posted by: Ross on March 21, 2003 11:29 AM

Son, the war does not stop and start for your little "business meetings." Get your ass back in front of that computer! Now! That is an order!

Posted by: Sgt. Hardass on March 21, 2003 11:38 AM

CNN Radio is reporting that CNN has been kicked out of Baghdad.

Posted by: Illicit Taxonomy on March 21, 2003 11:42 AM

Is that Saddam on the stretcher, Saddam Copy #1, Saddam Copy #2, Saddam's son, Sadaam's other son, Wolf Blitzer, or a big sack of US disinformation. I hope it's the real one, though.

Posted by: Jeff on March 21, 2003 11:48 AM

I just heard that it was four people from cnn, I don't think it is all of CNN

Posted by: cck on March 21, 2003 11:49 AM

If you have another business meeting, we'll know that the terrorists have won.

Posted by: MattS on March 21, 2003 11:50 AM

Hey come back!

Anti-Air fire in Baghdad, and sirens are on.

Posted by: Augusto on March 21, 2003 12:03 PM

The Iraqis demanded that the CNN office be closed and CNN expelled. The four CNN crewmembers are on their way to Jordan.

But freelance journalists are still in Baghdad -- including Peter Arnett (now with MSNBC/National Geographic) -- but CNN was the last official news agency still in Baghdad. (Interestingly enough, CNN has had an office in Baghdad since August 1990 -- even before GWI.)

Stationary cameras are still broadcasting -- and can still be seen on CNN.

Looks like the first B52s might be reaching Baghdad, as well.

Posted by: Illicit Taxonomy on March 21, 2003 12:13 PM

BTW, CNN Radio is at this moment reporting (quoting a Pentagon official) that "this is A-Day" -- the beginning of Shock and Awe...

Posted by: Illicit Taxonomy on March 21, 2003 12:15 PM

CNN, Fox and other news sources are reporting Shock and Awe has started. B52's are almost there (or might have already arrived, which would explain the ack-ack fire over Baghdad).

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--A second U.S. Marine has been killed in combat in Iraq, the Cable News Network reported Friday.
The network also reported that a third Marine had been injured by friendly fire.

company was sweeping around a burning oil pumping station.

I just read on bbc that France will not accept a US-UK administration of Iraq after the war. What the fuck does that mean? Are they going to fight us for it?

03/21 12:36P (DJ)US Launches Major Aerial Campaign Against Iraq -US Aide
Story 4430 DJ US/Major Aerial Campaign:
Scope Tied To Surrender Talks

Another senior U.S. official said the escalation of the aerial campaign might not be as intense as originally planned because U.S. surrender talks with senior Iraqi officials were continuing.
This official said Gen. Tommy Franks, the war's top commander, would "scale" the intensity of the bombardment in accordance with progress in the surrender talks. Within hours, however, it would be too late to reach a successful conclusion to the talks, and then, if no conclusion was reached, the bombing would go full-throttle, the official said.
One U.S. official said the assault was ordered after U.S. forces met some resistance earlier in the day, raising concerns that the Iraqi high command was regaining control. In the first hours of the war, administration officials had detected evidence that the Iraqi leadership was in disarray.
The Cable News Network reported from the Pentagon that virtually all U.S. Navy and Air Force assets would be used, including B-52 and stealth B-2 bombers, planes based on aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf and cruise missiles fired from surface ships and submarines.

The pictures of this are devastating.

Peter Arnett is live right now on MSNBC:

"Much bigger than Desert Storm. Much, much bigger."

"Just like out of an action movie."

Peter A. out of breath, stunned ...

any urls to catch this as live video on the web?

Posted by: Hank on March 21, 2003 01:10 PM

You can watch it live on BBC, don't have the specific link handy. Mind you, if 911 is anything to go by, they'll be replaying the same footage for the next week or three.

Posted by: Rapslef on March 21, 2003 01:12 PM

For a live feed, go to the MSNBC website. Tom Brokaw is anchoring, switching between Peter Arnett in Baghdad, David Bloom coming up from the south in one of the tank columns, and Stormin' Norman.

Peter Arnett is now saying that the main presidential palace is "gone".

Posted by: Illicit Taxonomy on March 21, 2003 01:13 PM

More from Peter A. on the MSNBC feed:

"All the action is on the west bank of the Tigris River."

(Leadership compounds, in other words.)

Arnett is saying that the city proper hasn't been hit yet. Everything is focused on Saddam's palaces and leadership offices.

As someone who's stuck at work without a TV I for one appreciate everything your doing. I don't need linked sources. I'm happy with your breakdowns.

Keep up the good work!

Extraordinary and prolific job of generating on-the-spot journalism without a high-tech support staff. I live directly across the street from Fox 5 in NYC and see what they require to get some pitifully fluffy stuff onto their newswire. Keep up the good work, and remember Ben Franklin's admonition, "It's a republic, if you can KEEP it."
