From the Middle of Texas, Where the Center's on the RightArgument for the Status Quo in Drug policy By Don Henry Ford Jr. I am tired of arguing against current policy on the war on drugs, tired of being rejected by my own, tired of finding myself included in the groups we hate, like Negroes that act like Negroes, Mexicans and other Spanish speakers, Arabs, Islamists, Liberals, Communists, French, athiests, Russians, slant-eyed races, agnostics and terrorists. (My apologies to any of the above willing to act like decent Chrisitan white folk.)
So today I argue on behalf of continuing our current policy in the world. Being as how my primary field or expertise is the war on drugs, I will begin there. We absolutely must continue to fight this war. Why? Well, first consider how many people have jobs because we do. There's the DEA, the FBI, Customs, Federal Marshals, Border Patrol, a healthy percentage of state and local lawmen, judges, lawyers, both defense and prosecutorial, prison wardens, prison guards, those that provide services for all of these: food, water, electricity, vehicles, preachers for our prison ministries, drug counselors (not near enough of these), paid informants, diplomats, ambassadors, foreign fighters and those of us that train them, our own soldiers, arms manufacturers, car dealers, plane and helicopter companies, and those that provide all the fuel we burn in this pursuit. Apologies to those I left out. Then there are the legal drug companies with all those patents. What will happen if we allow people to self-medicate with a bunch of herbs people can grow right in their own backyard? Think of all the mega corporations that will suffer. All the doctors, pharmacists, psychologists and psychiatrists that spent all those years earning the exclusive right to cure and profit from these illnesses. And then get to prescribe drugs to combat the side effects caused by the other drugs they give. Consider all the people that make and market alcohol and tobacco. They worked long and hard to gain exclusive rights to drug our nation. And they too contribute plenty of work in our jails and hospitals and family counselors and ambulance drivers and, well, the list is long. Once again, forgive me for those I forgot to mention. Then there's this. We all know we can't win this war, so we will be able to get the drugs anyway and we can selectively catch and prosecute those we don't like. (See the list above.) Enough money will get through to keep a bunch of them producing more drugs and a bunch of these undesirables will stay in their own land rather than come here looking for the only place where a legal job pays enough to live well. That means we can continue to provide jobs to those who wish to kill and capture, spray and defoliate, interrogate and jail the enemy. (See the list above.) We can turn our heads to those pursue our national interests and let them make money by selling the drugs, those like the war-lords in Afghanistan or the right wing paramilitaries in Colombia. They do a great service to the rest of this. We will continue to ignore the common user in our own country; most of them don't really do all that much harm anyway, especially those with enough money to buy their drugs. And for those that don't have enough money...well, someone has to fill jails and prisons. Our puppet governments will continue to be hated by the masses in their own countries, so we will be able to offer them protection in exchange for their natural resources at much reduced rates. This will further piss off the people. Maybe even start a war where we can come in and take over the whole damn country, if they have anything we really need. After all, we do have the best weapons systems and the most ingenious ways of killing without getting close enough to get dirty or risk harm. And there will always some wanting to be on the winning side of the war. Then there are our children. No one wants their children doing drugs unless Pfizer, or some other legitimate manufacturer makes them. Think of the millions of kids that might resort to smoking marijuana instead of taking their Ritalin or their Adderal, or whatever other proper medication we might prescribe. Hell, they'll do this without paying doctors. And they might go through their whole life without taking medicines. Think of the consequences. How will insurance companies make any money off of that? No, the more I think about it, the more convinced I become. There is no way we can stop fighting this thing we call the war on drugs without losing our grip on the world.
So strap on your guns and riot gear, man the borders, generate your propaganda and let's get it on! Don July 7, 2005 - 11:36am
