SARS Update, April 25

SARS Headlines:

Beijing hospitals are being sealed, as part of a city-wide SARS crackdown. The Chinese province of Anhui reports its first case. (See “China” section)

Bulgaria reports its first case, a man who travelled from Toronto.

Donations are being collected to buy isolation suits in Hong Kong. (See "Hong Kong" section)

Singapore and Ontario, Canada governments plan to pay those who are quarantined. (See "Singapore" and "Canada" sections)

Beijing:
In Beijing, massive quarantines have been ordered, covering homes, schools, hospitals, prisons (for employees) and other locations. The Beijing University People's Hospital was sealed, with > 1000 staff and patients inside. The Ditan Hospital was also sealed off. The Chinese government said that martial law was not part of their plans.

From a correspondent 'jf': "Xian [in Shanxi province] is in a panic. The universities are blockaded by police - no one in - on one out. Panic buying in the supermarkets. Everyone wearing masks - masks all sold out. But even more than that, their co-workers said that if they [jf's friends] leave Xian and return they don't want to have anything to do with them. They say it is very bizarre.


Hong Kong:
The South China Morning Post is running a campaign for donations to buy protective suits for the Hong Kong hospital personnel. Read more about it, at the BigWhiteGuy's Blog.


Singapore:
The government says that a payment up to Singapore$ 700 would be paid to self-employed persons and workers, from the PP World Center food market, who are in 10-day quarantine.

The "Courage" fund has increased, to over Singapore $4 million. Over S $3 million has been raised by donations from the public, with a contribution of S $1 million from the government. The fund will be used to help health care workers, victims of SARS and their families.

Canada:
The Premier of Ontario, Ernie Eves said, "I am giving you my word that any Ontarian who has lost wages because they've been asked to go into quarantine by public health officials, will be fully compensated."
