These Concepts Of Income Tax Expense And Calculations?

Q: I have not been able to fully follow the calculations behind "Income Tax Expense" in the Operating Statement and "Provision for Deferred Tax Liability" in the Statement of Financial Position in my SMSF's end-of-year reports. My accountant says it is too complex for him to explain. The Income Tax Expense calculation involves concepts like tax effect accounting, permanent differences, etc. Can someone point me to some place on the web - or elsewhere - that explains these concepts of Income Tax Expense and calculations?

A: - It's only arithmetic. Don't be intimidated by the jargon. My understanding of this is that it relates to situations where tax is not payable yet but you can reasonably say that the liability is there. E.g. you own some shares that have capital gains. If you sold them you would have to pay GCT. Therefore they book the tax liability as a cost (income tax expense) and as a liability

(provision for deferred income tax). - Putting it simply, Deferred Tax Liability (aka Future Assessable) and Deferred Tax Asset (aka Future Deductable) is the difference between the ATO's cost/ value and the Accounting cost/ value x by the tax rate. Some examples: You make a provision for audit fee $10,000. Accounting value $10k, tax value $0 (ATO does not allow this as a deduction) ($10,000 -$0) x 15% = $1,500 Deferred Tax Asset or Future Deductable You accrue Interest receivable $20,000. Accounting Value $20k, tax value $0 (ATO will not tax you till you receive it) ($20,000 - $0) x 15%=$3,000 Deferred Tax Liability or Future Assessable -
