Q: I am looking for a source for the felt type lining material for wooden jewelry boxes. I have seen this material in store bought boxes, but have not been able to locate in any woodworking catalogs I have. Has anyone seen this or know where I can get some?

A: -check out your local fabric and/or craft shop(s) -What you are looking for is called 'flocking'. You can buy felt or velvet, but unless you can cut and paste perfectly it is not going to look right. Flocking is what you would get if you shaved velvet, little fluffy stuff, it comes in a bag. You paint on the glue then shake on the flocking, volia, nice interior for your box. This can be bought at Lee Valley (http://www.leevalley.com), spend the refundable $5 and get the catalog. I checked their online catalog, and flocking is not listed, but it is on page 125 of their year 1999/2000 catalog. -These kits will enable even the fumble-fingered to put a soft, high-quality lining in a case or jewellery box in a few minutes. They can also be used for putting non-marring bases on lamps or anywhere you would be cutting and pasting felt, baize, or other lining material. "Suede-Tex" is made from rayon filament cut into uniform length of 1/32 that is sprayed onto and adhesive covered surface. A specially designed spray gun separates the filaments and ejects them, arrow like, onto the adhesive. They are anchored upright to give a soft surface with an even nap. The resulting flocking is lustrous and durable; the fibres cannot be rubbed off after 10 to 15 hours drying time. The 3 oz of Suede-Tex (with 8 oz of matching adhesive undercoat) will cover more than 15 sq. ft of surface. If you put the piece being worked on inside a large, clean cardboard box, all the leftover fibres can readily be trapped for reuse. Two kits are available. The professional model kit includes a metal spray gun, brush, green and brown flocking material (3 oz of each), and matching adhesive undercoat (8 oz of each.) The mini flocking kit is suitable for smaller projects. It includes a cardboard flocking gun

(you may need to shake the fibres in the canister a few times, but it works well), 3 oz of green flocking material and 8 oz of green adhesive. The mini gun and blue or bright red flocking fibres are available separately. Kits and adhesives shipped only by ground methods; fibres can be shipped by any means. -I use felt from Wal-Mart or JoAnn's Fabric. I find the heavy felt easier to work with. I use solvent type contact cement. The felt will stretch a little so you can get a nice tight even fit if the felt is cut just off a little. I could give more detail if interested.
