Is Melatonin Safe With Antidepressants?

Q: Does anyone know if melatonin is safe to take if one is taking an antidepressant, such as Wellbutrin. I am on 150 mg Wellbutrin and need to wean off of Dalmane, an addictive sleep med, but was hoping maybe melatonin would smooth out the sleep side effects that Wellbutrin has brought on.

A:You may want to post this on soc.support.depression.treatment BTW, I found that Wellbutrin SR disturbed my sleep but regular Wellbutrin didn't. I'd take the last dose by 6 pm and I was fine. I am on SR and didnt know that. What dosage were you on both SR and not? I am only on 150mg a day. Maybe even at that low dose, its the SR thats doing it to my sleep. whattya think? I started with 100mg Wellbutrin SR, 2x a day. But my sleep was disturbed and I had a "caffeinated" feeling. If I didn't take the second dose, it was better. I figured that the sustained release formula was staying

in my system too long. So I switched to (the regular) Wellbutrin, and found I was fine. My doctor wanted me to take 100 mg 3x a day, so I'd take the last dose by 6 pm. and it has worked out well. Here is a list that should determine who can and cannot take a melatonin supplement. Melatonin is not for use by children, teenagers, or pregnant or lactating women. If you are under medical supervision, or have an auto immune disease, diabetes, a depressive disorder, epilepsy, leukemia, or lymphoprliferative disorder or are taking MAO inhibitor drugs or corticosteroids such as cortisol or prednisone, consult with your physician before taking this type of product.
