For example, if your hand has an Ace and a 5 in it, the hand could either add up to 16, or 6, the 16 if the ace is used as an 11 and 6 if you used the ace as a 1. You can choose to double down; which is when you split your two cards, by placing them face up on the table instead and doubling your bet. A good time to double up is when you have been dealt two cards that equal 11 (5,6) and the dealer is showing a total of 5. When you double up, you are then dealt one extra card face down, this forces the dealer to match you. Since the dealer is playing blind, you often have a good chance at winning the hand.
