Wine Glasses

Wine glasses come in a variety of shapes and forms and can greatly enhance the wine drinking and tasting experience. Believe it or not, modern wine glasses are the culmination of centuries of trial and error. Shape, glass thickness, and stem are all areas developed and improved upon to allow the wine drinker to better understand, discern and enjoy the elements of a simple glass of wine. Modern wine glasses are actually a carefully crafted tool. The history of wine drinking vessels dates back to the time before Christ, with documents written by such historical luminaries as Pliny in the first century describing the benefits of drinking wine from a glass rather than silver or gold vessels. Wine glasses in the form of ornate goblets still exist that date back to the time of Christopher Columbus. At the dawn of the seventeenth century, wine glasses began being adorned with delicate engravings and etchings. Today wine glasses are available in a variety

of shapes and sizes, and are created with the specific wine to be consumed in mind. Some wine glasses are large and bulbous, with an opening much smaller than the glass at its widest point in order to enjoy the more aromatic and full flavored red wines. The idea is that the liquid will circulate and the aromas will rise to the small opening and be inhaled and enjoyed by the wine taster. Less full bodied white wines are often best consumed in a narrower bodied glass where the bouquet is less important. Whether you are a vastly experienced wine connoisseur or you are a novice sampling a taste of wine with dinner, wine glasses have come to provide enhanced pleasure to the wine drinker.
