The Rising Popularity Of Tongue Rings

A few years ago, tongue rings were considered aberrant and offensive. They were rather rare and only social deviants wore them. However, now they are considered a fashion statement. No longer the sole territory of “punk kids,” tongue rings are visible everywhere from high end restaurants to Fortune 500 corporate offices. Many people do not even notice them any more unless the tongue is stuck out with the purpose of being visible. How did this practice become so acceptable? Why is it that a well dressed and professional receptionist can get away with wearing one to work? The answer is simply that they became a mainstream fad that evolved into something that became appropriate. If done properly, and worn with discretion, there is no reason why tongue rings should be a distraction. After all, they are kept mainly out of sight in the mouth. As long as one does not click his or her tongue ring against teeth or purposely stick it out, many people do not even recognize that a tongue ring is being worn. Most tongue rings are actually in the form of studs. These can be plain silver or have gemstones or beads on the top. It is also possible to get them in different shapes, such

as squares or triangles. And they can even be topped with a ring. It is very rare to see a true tongue ring. However, this does not prevent the studs from being very popular and almost socially acceptable (there are a few hold outs against them). If you decide to get your tongue pierced and wear a tongue ring, there are some important things to remember. First of all, and most important, is to make sure that you are seeing a licensed professional working in a sterile environment. Also, be sure to follow all care instructions and observe any dietary restrictions. Finally, practice good etiquette. Most employers do not mind tongue rings, so long as they do not bother customers and clients.
