It used to be when someone said retirement community, the mental picture was an old ten story building with old people slowly ambling through the halls with nothing to do and nowhere specific to go. The buildings are dark and meals are served in a dilapidated cafeteria where the food is not much above prison grub. Luckily, the idea of the retirement community is very far away from the scenario above, and people are actually looking forward to moving into a retirement community when they get old enough. A retirement community is not a nursing home and is definitely not for people who need to be cared after with round the clock coverage. A retirement community can now mean a number of different things – and different retirement communities offer different things. Some retirement communities are simply for people who do not want to live in a neighborhood and have to maintain their lawn or deal with kids riding around the neighborhood getting into trouble.
