Is Prozac Safe ?
Q: The benefits vs. risks considerations for fluoxetine (Prozac)
currently does not fall clearly in favor of the benefits. Therefore,
it is of the greatest importance that it be determined whether there
is a particular subgroup of patients who respond better to fluoxetine
(Prozac) than to imipramine, so that the higher incidence of suicide
attempts may be tolerable.
A:Prozac started in 1978. It was killing clinical trial patients even
then. Did you bother to read those transcripts? They're from Eli Lilly
itself. The law firm got a court order to force Eli Lilly to hand over
all the data on Prozac.
Now, if a law firm is involved.... maybe there have been some
lawsuits. But, if you "resolve a legal dispute", there's no public
mention of it. Eli Lilly is paying out millions of dollars each year
to settle suicide claims, just so you don't hear about it. Also, Eli
Lilly won't pay out more than $1,000,000 on an individual lawsuit, so
don't be too greedy.
GSK, the makers of Paxil got caught with that Donald Schell case
and had to pay out $6.4 million... and they did without an appeal.
There are over 6,000 Americans sueing GSK over Paxil withdrawal
problems. GSK has set aside $300,000,000. to cover these lawsuits.
Really? Show us the proof. If you're going to make a statement like
this, then back it up. Show us the stats on the top 10 most
complained-about drugs. Show us the absolute numbers, and the ratio of
complaints per 1000 users. Or don't make claims you can't back up.
But since its launch in January 1988 in the US, and in the UK shortly after,
when Prozac was let loose on whole populations rather than on selected
patients in clinical trials, there has been a spate of disturbing accounts
of violence and suicide committed by people prescribed the drug by their
doctors. Some 200 cases have come to court in the US. Victims and families
of killers have sued the multi-national
