Tucked away in Washington, San Juan Island is a place just teaming with history and culture. Also called as the Pig War Island, this name came about when the fights between British and Americans came to a head in the so-called Pig War of 1859, resulting in a join military occupation that lasted 12 years. The conflict began when an American settler in San Juan shot and killed a hog belonging to Bellevue Farm, which supported the Hudson's Bay Co.'s fur trapping operations. A settler, Lyman Cutler, killed the hog because it persisted in invading his garden. And thus the name stuck. Unlike the weather in most of the Pacific Northwest, San Juan has clear skies for 247 days in the year. The islands enjoy all four seasons, and the weather is eternally moderate. Temperatures rarely top 80 degrees in the summer and rarely fall below 30 degrees in the winter.
