Double Wedding Ring Quilt ?

Q: I have been quilting for a few years. I am now tackling a double wedding ring quilt and machine piecing it all. For the most part its ok, but in some places it doesn't lay flat. Without ripping it all apart, can anyone give me any advice?

A:What parts exactly? If it's the intersecting squares, you might have to rip. On the curves, check to make sure your seam allowance was accurate, maybe those can be clipped or eased into shape. However, my usual solution: it'll all quilt out. Quilt heavily with a cotton batt designed to shrink up a little bit, and wonky seams will seem less significant. which parts don't like flat? is it the part that is pieced or the "melons" or the center? in general, if it is just a little wobbly, you should be able to steam and press and starch everything flat. you have to use a lot of steam and then let it cool and dry before you move it or you'll lose all the shape again. i'd definitely try this first. if that doesn't work, next look at the seam allowances, maybe you just need to take a deeper seam. if that doesn't work, then you can either rip it apart, or just forget about it and fix it with the quilting. (i bet if you write again and be more specific about the problem, somebody here can help you fix it.) Now make sure to write back and tell us more about yourself, your family, your QI's (Quilt Inspectors, usually furry and four legs but not always), any special chocoloate recipes, and of course your quilts. Your advice for my bumpy double wedding ring quilt has been great! It's true it will all iron out and quilt out.( a good metaphor for life too! ). The tricky part has been the intersecting squares.

I just wrestle a bit with it, and it doesn't look too bad. It's been a fun quilt for me because the patterned fabric was all my great and great-great grandmothers from the 20's and 30's. I've added all the solid parts. Now about me... I live in the bay area in C.

A: and am blessed with wonderful quilting resources here! I am really into Japanese textiles and using them in my quilts. I've just started using a computer, so I don't have any photos posted or anything. I just got married in Sept. My husband and two ever shedding cats are my harshest critics! I look forward to being part of a site with people who have the same obsession!
